Web design trends for 2022
1 – Fun and optimistic designs
In the 2022 web design trends, we notice a move towards visual optimism. This includes bright colors, fun features, surprising typography, lots of positive messages, and enhanced interactivity. This light-hearted and often unexpected approach is a way to bring us back to “normal” life. They offer a brief distraction from the more serious issues we’ve been facing since the beginning of the pandemic. The common thread in these concepts is that they all inject a little extra happiness into the world.

2 – Complex gradients
Gradients aren’t a brand-new trend, as they’ve been around for a while. However, complex gradients involving multiple colors, surprising shapes, and sometimes even textures are one of the recent trends emerging in web design. They are often used to add depth to more minimalistic designs.

3 – Image-free homepages
When you don’t have the perfect image or video, beautiful typography can definitely steal the show. A bold headline in surprising typography, paired with secondary typography and an unusual color scheme, can easily replace the large image commonly used as the homepage introduction (Hero Banner). This allows users to focus on the message you want to communicate quickly.

4 – Simple lines
A trend that feels both modern and retro is the use of simple lines in design. Designers use lines to delineate sections, headers, and paragraphs. These lines are also used in product galleries or to create a dynamic grid for the entire website. You can even add line illustrations (abstract or figurative) to push this style further. It’s clear that in this type of design, each line will have a greater impact on the final effect.

5 – Collage or abstract illustrations
Abstract illustrations with an organic texture that give the impression of being hand-drawn are very popular. Vector graphics and cute illustrations of people and objects have dominated web design for a few years. Now, people are looking for something a bit more natural and sophisticated. The key is to incorporate various textures and natural irregularities. Inspirations come from watercolor, ink, painting, screen printing effects, or paper textures. The lines are softer, mimicking the variations in weight made with graphite or ink.

6 – Friendly geometric shapes
Geometric shapes aren’t new; they were all the rage in the 70s. Who doesn’t remember the Radio-Canada logo made of half-circles in shades of red, orange, and yellow? These simple geometric shapes are back in today’s design. They add a playful aspect thanks to their eye-pleasing simplicity and can be easily animated on the web. Created with bright colors, they have an impact that draws the user’s attention and holds it.

7 – Pantone color of 2022
We are living in a time of transformation. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbolic representation of the period we are going through. As we emerge from intense isolation, our notions and standards are changing. Our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us push the boundaries of reality. It opens the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities. With gaming trends, the growing popularity of the metaverse, and the increasing artistic community in the digital space, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how digital world color trends manifest in the physical world, and vice versa.

8 – Neutral and inclusive design and texts
Inclusivity extends to race, gender neutrality, culture, accessibility, and abilities. Your website should be designed in such a way that anyone who wants to access the content can do so. People also want to see others on the screen with whom they can identify. But it’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it. Readable and alternative texts (font, size, and color) are ways to make reading easier. It has also become standard to offer multiple gender and pronoun options in forms and dropdown menus. From imagery to language to alternative text, there’s no reason not to try to make your projects more inclusive for everyone.

9 – Web experience and accessibility
In May, Google launched its Page Experience update, which places much more emphasis on user experience when ranking websites in its listings. The importance of this should not be underestimated. It means that web designers now need to focus much more on certain elements. This includes loading speed, interactivity, safe browsing, and visual stability. Otherwise, they will quickly see their sites disappear from Google’s first page. At the same time, choosing to make your website more accessible is not just a way to serve a broader audience. When done correctly, web accessibility also boosts your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts and improves your website’s organic search rankings.
