Douglas Mental Health University Institute

Objective
Modernize the Institute’s digital presence to reflect its clinical and scientific excellence. The new website needed to support its international reach, improve access to information for diverse audiences, and provide a scalable technological foundation capable of evolving alongside its research, care, and training initiatives.

Information Architecture
An in-depth strategic reflection was conducted around the site structure to organize a complex volume of content. The architecture was built around major pillars, including understanding mental health, the Institute, care and services, and research. This structure enables the platform to address the needs of citizens, professionals, researchers, and international partners alike.

User Experience (UX)
The user experience was designed to simplify access to content that is often sensitive or highly specialized. Clear, intuitive navigation guides visitors based on their needs — whether seeking care, exploring clinical programs, or discovering scientific advancements. Particular attention was paid to readability, content hierarchy, and journey fluidity.

Interface Design (UI)
The interface embraces a bright, clean approach inspired by the Douglas Foundation’s visual universe. Generous white space, immersive imagery, and well-segmented content blocks help humanize the experience while showcasing scientific expertise. The design balances institutional rigor with the human sensitivity essential to mental health.

Accessibility
Accessibility was central to the mandate. Content structures were optimized for comprehension, and assistive tools, including the UserWay module, were integrated to adapt display and navigation to diverse user needs. The objective: deliver an inclusive experience aligned with public-sector best practices.

Technological Development
Built on WordPress, the site relies on a flexible architecture enabling internal teams to manage and evolve content autonomously. A series of modular templates were developed to support growth, including news, services, initiatives, and research content.

Results
The Douglas Mental Health University Institute now benefits from a website that reflects the scale of its impact. Modern, accessible, and scalable, the platform supports both its clinical and scientific missions. It facilitates access to information, showcases institutional expertise, and reinforces its position as a global reference in mental health.
